Q.Distinguish between the Cash Book (Bank Column) and the Pass Book.
| Basis | Cash Book (Bank Column) | Pass Book |
|---|---|---|
| Maintained by | The firm itself | The bank |
| Point of view | The firm's own point of view | The bank's point of view |
| A deposit into the bank | Debited | Credited |
| A cheque issued/paid | Credited | Debited |
| A favourable position | Shown as a Debit balance | Shown as a Credit balance |
| An overdraft | Shown as a Credit balance | Shown as a Debit balance |
Both books record exactly the same underlying transactions, but because the Pass Book views every transaction from the BANK's side rather than the firm's, its debit and credit are the exact mirror image of the Cash Book's. A transaction recorded correctly, and on the same date, in both books never causes a difference — every genuine difference between the two balances arises either from a timing gap (one book recording a transaction before the other) or from an error in one of the books.
Cash Book (Bank Column): maintained by the firm, deposit = Dr., cheque paid = Cr., favourable balance = Dr. Pass Book: maintained by the bank, deposit = Cr., cheque paid = Dr., favourable balance = Cr. — a mirror image of the same account.
