Important Features of the Economy of Maharashtra
The economy of Maharashtra has a distinctive character that the Std XI Economics syllabus expects a student to describe and explain.
1. India's most industrialised and diversified economy. Maharashtra is the leading industrial state of the country, producing a large share of national manufacturing output, and its economy is unusually diversified — strong in agriculture, industry and services alike, rather than dependent on any one activity. This breadth gives it resilience that narrowly-based state economies lack.
2. A services- and industry-led income, with a smaller farm share. The tertiary (services) sector is by far the largest contributor to the state's income, followed by industry, with agriculture and allied activities contributing the smallest share. This is the classic signature of a comparatively advanced economy — very different from a still-agrarian state where agriculture dominates income.
3. A workforce still heavily dependent on agriculture. Despite agriculture's small and shrinking share of income, a large proportion of the state's workforce still depends on farming for a livelihood — the same mismatch (many workers, little income) that signals low farm productivity and surplus labour, and that development policy tries to correct.
4. High urbanisation. Maharashtra is one of the most urbanised major states, home to Mumbai (India's largest urban agglomeration and financial capital) and to other large cities such as Pune, Nagpur and Nashik. This urban base powers its industry and services.
5. A powerful co-operative sector. The state pioneered and is famous for its co-operative movement, especially in sugar, dairy and credit — a distinctive institutional feature examined in its own section below. …
