Class Osteichthyes (Greek osteon = bone, ichthyes = fish) includes animals such as Bombay duck, lungfishes (Protopterus, Lepidosiren), Exocoetus (flying fish), Hippocampus (sea horse), pomfret, Labeo rohita (rohu), Catla (katla), Clarias (magur), and popular aquarium species such as Betta (fighting fish) and Pterophyllum (angel fish).
As the name suggests, these fishes have a bony endoskeleton, giving them the common name 'bony fishes.' They are found in both fresh and marine waters. The exoskeleton is formed of cycloid or ctenoid scales, and the mouth is usually terminal (at the very front of the head). The tail fin is formed of two equal lobes and is described as homocercal (symmetrical). …
