Continuous Charge Distribution

So far, every calculation in this chapter has treated charge as concentrated at one or more discrete POINTS. In many real, practical situations, however, a very large number of individual charges are packed extremely close together -- much closer to each other than their overall distance from the point where the resulting field is being calculated. In such cases it becomes far more convenient (and, for all practical purposes, exactly as accurate) to treat the whole collection of charges not as individual points but as a single total charge spread out CONTINUOUSLY -- along a line, over a surface, or throughout a volume -- rather than trying to track every individual point charge separately. …

Misc DYK.5Can you tell? -- The Earth's own surface charge density

Worked out. States, as a genuine numerical fact, that the Earth's own surface carries a (small) uniform surface charge density of σ=−1.33\sigma=-1.33 nC/m^2, equivalent to about 8.3×1098.3\times10^9 electrons per square metre, and poses the question of why this real, measurable charge on the Earth's entire surface is never actually felt by people standing on it in everyday life -- an application-style prompt connecting the abstract idea of surface charge density directly to a real, planet-scale continuou …
