Semiconductor devices offer several practical advantages that explain their dominance in modern electronics: (1) their electronic properties can be controlled and tuned to suit a specific requirement, largely through doping; (2) they are smaller in size and lighter in weight than the older technologies they replaced; (3) they can operate at small voltages (of the order of a few millivolts) and need only small currents (of the order of microamperes or milliamperes), so they consume comparatively little power; (4) they show almost no heating effect in operation, making them thermally stable; (5) their small size allows a faster speed of operation; and (6) they make it possible t …
