ERP in Business and Commerce

Why ERP matters for business

ERP has become a standard part of how medium and large organisations are run, and increasingly of small ones too. Its role in business and commerce can be seen from several angles.

ERP across different kinds of organisations
  • Manufacturing businesses use ERP to link production planning, materials, inventory, and costing, so that goods are made efficiently and on time.
  • Trading and retail businesses use it to manage purchasing, stock, sales, billing, and customer records across many products and outlets.
  • Service organisations (banks, hospitals, transport, education) use ERP to manage finances, staff, and customer/client information.
  • Government and public bodies use ERP-type systems for accounting, payroll, and administration.

Because ERP is built from modules, the same basic system can be adapted to all these different sectors — this flexibility is one reason for its wide use.

How ERP supports commercial functions
  • Trade and buying/selling — ERP records purchases and sales, raises invoices, tracks payments, and keeps stock accurate, making everyday commercial transactions faster and error-free.
  • Finance and accounting — it maintains the books automatically and produces financial statements and reports for owners, managers, banks, and tax authorities.
  • Better customer service — instant access to information on stock, orders, and customers helps a business answer queries and deliver reliably, which builds goodwill.
  • Support for e-commerce — modern ERP can connect to a company's online store, so that an online order automatically updates stock, accounts, and dispatch — joining the digital shop-front to the back-office.
  • Informed management decisions — the reports and analytics from ERP help owners and managers plan, control costs, and grow the business.
