The second derivative means "differentiate twice" (§8).

First derivative. Differentiate term by term:

dydx=ddx(x4−3x2)=4x3−6x.\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{d}{dx}\big(x^4 - 3x^2\big) = 4x^3 - 6x.

Second derivative. Differentiate the first derivative again:
