Q.A furniture trader has ₹210 hundred (₹21{,}000) to invest and space for at most 40 pieces. A table costs ₹5 hundred and a chair ₹3 hundred. Taking xx = number of tables and yy = number of chairs, write the constraints (including non-negativity) for this situation.

Decision variables. xx = number of tables, yy = number of chairs.

Budget constraint. A table costs ₹5 hundred and a chair ₹3 hundred, so the total cost is 5x+3y5x+3y (in hundreds of rupees). The trader has at most ₹210 hundred, hence

5x+3y≤210.5x+3y\le 210.

Space constraint. There is room for at most 40 pieces in all:

x+y≤40.x+y\le 40.

Non-negativity. The numbers of tables and chairs cannot be negative:

x≥0,y≥0.x\ge0,\qquad y\ge0.

So the constraint set is

5x+3y≤210,x+y≤40,x≥0,y≥0.5x+3y\le 210,\quad x+y\le 40,\quad x\ge0,\quad y\ge0. …
