The Rikli and Jones Senior Citizen Fitness Test assesses the functional fitness of older adults (aged 60 and above) so that their ability to perform everyday activities safely and independently can be measured; its six items are the Chair Stand Test, the Arm Curl Test, the Six-Minute Walk Test, the Chair Sit-and-Reach Test, the Back Scratch Test, and the 8-Foot Up-and-Go Test.

Purpose

As people age, ordinary tasks — getting up from a chair, carrying groceries, reaching a high shelf, walking without tiring — start to depend on physical capacities that quietly decline over the years. The Rikli and Jones Senior Citizen Fitness Test was designed specifically to measure this functional fitness: the physical capacity needed to carry out normal daily activities safely and independently, without excessive fatigue. It uses simple, safe movements that mirror real-life tasks rather than athletic performance, requires only basic equipment (a chair, a stopwatch, a measuring tape, and light dumbbells), and can be administered in a school, community hall, or clinic. Its results help identify older adults at risk of losing independence, track fitness changes over time, and guide targeted exercise advice.

The Six Test Items

  1. Chair Stand Test — measures lower-body strength: the number of full stands from a seated position, arms crossed on the chest, completed in 30 seconds.

  2. Arm Curl Test — measures upper-body strength: the number of bicep curls completed in 30 seconds with a handheld dumbbell (8 pounds/3.6 kg for men, 5 pounds/2.3 kg for women).

  3. Six-Minute Walk Test — measures aerobic endurance: the maximum distance walked (not run) in 6 minutes around a rectangular track. For a person with an orthopaedic walking aid or balance difficulty, the 2-Minute Step Test — marching in place while lifting the knees to a marked height — is used as an alternative to this item.

  4. Chair Sit-and-Reach Test — measures lower-body flexibility: with one leg extended and ankle flexed, the distance the fingertips reach toward or past the toes, using an 18-inch ruler. …
