Buna-S, trade name SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber), is a copolymer usually made from about 75 parts butadiene and 25 parts styrene by sodium-catalysed addition polymerization, then vulcanized with sulfur. Its main speciality is superior mechanical strength and abrasion resistance compared with natural rubber, which is why it dominates the tyre industry.
Step 2 (Neoprene). Neoprene is an addition homopolymer of chloroprene (2-chloro-1,3-butadiene), which polymerizes rapidly in presence of oxygen and is vulcanized using magnesium oxide. Its main speciality is particular resistance to petroleum, vegetable oils, light and heat, so it is used for gasoline hose pipes, gaskets, cable insulation, jackets, and power-transmission/conveying belts -- applications where oil or heat expos …
