Alternating condensation of glycine and 6-aminohexanoic acid gives a biodegradable copolyamide, used chiefly for sutures.

Preparation: Nylon-2-nylon-6 is an alternating copolymer built from two different amino-acid-type monomers: glycine (aminoacetic acid, H2N−CH2−COOHH_2N-CH_2-COOH, which alone would polymerise to give 'nylon-2') and 6-aminohexanoic acid (H2N−(CH2)5−COOHH_2N-(CH_2)_5-COOH, which alone would give 'nylon-6'). Under condensation polymerisation conditions, the amino group of one monomer reacts with the carboxyl group of the next, releasing a molecule of water at each new amide bond formed, and the two monomers alternate regularly along the chain:

…+H2N−CH2−COOH+H2N−(CH2)5−COOH+…→[−NH−CH2−CO−NH−(CH2)5−CO−]n+water\ldots + H_2N-CH_2-COOH + H_2N-(CH_2)_5-COOH + \ldots \rightarrow [-NH-CH_2-CO-NH-(CH_2)_5-CO-]_n + \text{water}
