The five health-related components of physical fitness -- cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition -- together determine how well the body functions in daily life and how well it resists disease.

The health-related components, explained:

  • Cardiovascular (cardio-respiratory) endurance -- the ability of the heart, lungs and blood vessels to take in, transport and deliver oxygen to the working muscles during prolonged activity, allowing sustained effort without undue fatigue.
  • Muscular strength -- the maximum amount of force a muscle or muscle group can exert in a single effort, such as the heaviest weight that can be lifted once.

  • Flexibility -- the range of motion available at a joint or group of joints, allowing the body to move freely and efficiently and reducing the risk of muscle and joint injury.
