The light reaction yields three products — ATP, reduced hydrogen (NADPH) and oxygen — while sugar synthesis happens later, in the separate biosynthetic phase.

The light reaction, or photochemical phase, includes light absorption, splitting of water, oxygen release, and the formation of the high-energy intermediates ATP and NADPH. Electrons excited at the reaction centres of Photosystem II and Photosystem I are passed along an electron transport chain and eventually reduce NADP+ to NADPH + H+ — this reduced carrier is the "hydrogen" product referred to in such descriptions. At the same time, the proton gradient created across the thylakoid membrane during this electron flow drives the chemiosmotic synthesis of ATP.

Splitting of water, which is associated with Photosystem II, supplies the electrons needed to keep that photosystem functioning and simultaneously releases oxygen as one of the net products of photosynthesis, along with protons that add to the gradient. …
