The Solvay process depends critically on the bicarbonate intermediate being only sparingly soluble, so that it crystallises out of the reaction mixture and can be filtered off (Q12, Step 2).
Step 2: Compare NaHCO and KHCO solubility
Sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO, has comparatively low solubility in the cold, saturated, ammoniated brine and precipitates readily. Potassium bicarbonate, KHCO, in contrast, is considerably more soluble in water and does not precipitate under the same conditions.
