Figure B shows mutualism (the insect pollinates while feeding), figure D shows commensalism (cattle egret and grazing cattle), figure C shows Cuscuta parasitising its host plant, and in figure B the insect's role is pollination.

Ecological interactions are classified by the sign of the effect on each partner: a '+' for benefit, a '-' for harm, and a '0' for no effect. Applying that framework to each figure in turn:

i. Which figure shows mutualism? Figure B shows an insect visiting a flower and feeding on it while also transferring pollen between flowers of the same species. Both partners gain here -- the insect gets food (nectar or pollen), and the plant gets pollinated -- a (+, +) outcome, which is the definition of mutualism.

ii. What association is shown in D? Figure D depicts a cattle egret foraging close to grazing cattle. As the cattle move through the grass, they disturb and flush out insects, which the egret then catches. The egret clearly benefits; the cattle are neither helped nor harmed by the egret's presence. A (+, 0) outcome is commensalism.

iii. Name the organisms and the association in C. Figure C shows Cuscuta (dodder), a leafless, chlorophyll-lacking parasitic plant, twining around and drawing nutrients from a host plant through haustoria. Cuscuta benefits (+) while the host plant is harmed (-) by the loss of nutrients -- a (+, -) outcome, which is parasitism. …
