The life span of every multicellular organism (plant or animal) that reproduces sexually can be divided into three distinct phases:

  • (a) Juvenile phase: This is the period of growth and development between the birth (or germination, in the case of seeds) of an organism and the attainment of reproductive maturity. In plants, this phase is also called the vegetative phase — the plant grows in size and develops its vegetative structures (roots, stems, leaves) but does not yet flower or reproduce. In animals, it corresponds to the period before puberty/sexual maturity, during which the reproductive organs and gametes are not yet functional.

  • (b) Reproductive phase: This is the phase during which the organism becomes capable of undergoing sexual reproduction. In plants, this is marked by the appearance of reproductive structures — flowering (in angiosperms); the length of this phase varies greatly between species (e.g., annual plants flower once, while perennial plants may flower repeatedly over years). In animals, this phase is marked by attainment of sexual/reproductive maturity, during which gametes are actively produced and the organism can mate and reproduce. …
