Pure alumina () has an extremely high melting point, around 2323 K (about 2050°C). Electrolysing molten alumina directly at this temperature would require enormous amounts of energy and specialised equipment, making the process highly uneconomical.
Step 2 – What cryolite does
In the Hall–Héroult process, purified alumina is dissolved in molten cryolite (), typically along with a small amount of fluorspar (). This mixture has two crucial benefits:
- It drastically lowers the melting point of the mixture to roughly 1140–1200 K (about 950°C), far below that of pure alumina, saving very significant amounts of energy.
- It increases the electrical conductivity of the molten electrolyte, allowing the electrolysis current to pass through more efficiently.
