Operating profit is the profit from the firm's normal operating activities — gross profit less operating (office and selling) expenses — before non-operating incomes and expenses.

Meaning. Operating profit measures how well the main, regular business is doing, ignoring items that are incidental or extraordinary. It is therefore a better indicator of operating efficiency than net profit, which is affected by one-off gains and losses.

Computation (two equivalent ways)

Method 1₹

Add: Operating incomes...
Less: Office and administrative expenses(...)
Less: Selling and distribution expenses(...)
Operating profit...
Method 2₹
Net profit...
Add: Non-operating expenses/losses (e.g. loss by fire, interest on loan)...
Less: Non-operating incomes (e.g. interest/dividend received, profit on sale of asset)(...)
