A two-way frequency distribution (also called a bivariate frequency distribution) classifies data according to two variables at the same time, showing how observations are jointly distributed over both.

While a simple (univariate) frequency distribution classifies data on the basis of only one variable (e.g. marks of students), a two-way frequency distribution classifies observations on the basis of two variables simultaneously — for example, the heights and weights of a group of students.
