A histogram represents frequency through the AREA of each rectangle (height × width), not through height alone — this matters especially when class intervals are of unequal width.

When all class intervals are of EQUAL width, the height of each rectangle is directly proportional to its frequency, and histograms are often drawn this simple way. But the general, technically correct rule — which also correctly handles UNEQUAL class intervals — is that frequency is proportional to the AREA of the rectangle, i.e., to (height × width), where the height is adjusted to frequency density (frequency ÷ class width) when widths differ.
