The three lever classes differ by which part is in the middle: fulcrum (first-class), load (second-class) or effort (third-class).

  • First-class lever: the fulcrum lies between the effort and the load (Effort–Fulcrum–Load). Body example: nodding of the head at the atlanto-occipital (neck) joint — the joint is the fulcrum, neck muscles the effort, the head the load.
