Palisade parenchyma is compact, columnar and chloroplast-rich near the leaf's upper surface (photosynthesis-focused); spongy parenchyma is loosely packed with large air spaces near the lower surface (gas-exchange-focused).

In a dorsiventral (dicot) leaf, the ground tissue between the upper and lower epidermis is differentiated into mesophyll, made up of two distinct types of parenchyma:

Palisade parenchyma:

  • Consists of elongated, columnar cells arranged vertically and compactly, with minimal intercellular spaces.
  • Located towards the upper (adaxial) epidermis, directly facing the incoming sunlight.
  • Contains a large number of chloroplasts, making it the principal site of photosynthesis in the leaf.

Spongy parenchyma:

  • Consists of loosely and irregularly arranged, rounded or oval cells with abundant large intercellular (air) spaces between them.
  • Located towards the lower (abaxial) epidermis, closer to the stomata. …
