Vasopressin is called ADH because it makes the kidneys reabsorb more water, producing less, more concentrated urine and helping the body conserve water.

Vasopressin is synthesised by neurosecretory cells of the hypothalamus and released into the blood from the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis). Its principal target is the kidney, specifically the distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct of the nephron, where it increases the permeability of these tubules to water. This promotes greater reabsorption of water from the filtrate back into the blood, which concentrates the urine and reduces the total volume excreted. When body fluid is low or blood osmotic pressure rises (e.g., during dehydration), vasopressin secretion increases to conserve water; when the body is well-hydrated, its secretion decreases …
