The pituitary is the "master gland" — its removal would halt body growth (loss of GH) and disrupt the function of the thyroid, adrenal cortex, and gonads, since those depend on the pituitary's own trophic (stimulating) hormones.

The pituitary gland (hypophysis), located at the base of the brain, is often called the master endocrine gland because it produces hormones that either act directly on target tissues or, more importantly, stimulate and regulate the activity of several other endocrine glands. Its anterior lobe secretes hormones such as growth hormone (GH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), among others.
