Human cells move in three ways — amoeboid movement (crawling by pseudopodia), ciliary movement (beating hair-like cilia) and muscular movement (contraction of muscle).

Movement is one of the defining signs of life, and even at the level of individual cells the human body achieves it in three distinct ways. Together these range from a single cell chasing down an intruder to a whole limb swinging through the air.

  • Amoeboid movement. Some specialised cells travel not by using muscles but by pushing out temporary extensions of themselves, in the same way that Amoeba creeps along. In our own body the macrophages and the leucocytes of the blood move like this. The movement is brought about by pseudopodia — literally false feet — which form when the protoplasm inside the cell streams and flows in a particular direction, pushing the cell forward. Cytoskeletal elements, especially the fine threads called microfilaments, are also involved. …
