A diploid plant with sporophylls arranged into cones, adapted to harsh conditions, is a gymnosperm.

Gymnosperms are woody plants -- shrubs, medium trees or very tall trees -- whose main body is the sporophyte, and this sporophyte is diploid. Their leaves and general form are well built to withstand harsh conditions: conifer leaves are commonly reduced to needles that cut down exposed surface area, and a thick waxy cuticle together with stomata sunk into pits limits water loss, letting these plants survive in dry, cold or windy habitats.

Gymnosperms are heterosporous, producing microspores and megaspores inside sporangia carried on leaf-like sporophylls. These sporophylls are arranged spirally along a central axis, building up compact or loose structures called strobili or cones -- male (microsporangiate) cones and female (macrosporangiate) cones.

  • (A) Monocots and (B) Dicots are angiosperms, which bear flowers, not sporophylls in cones. …
