Stratified epithelium in skin protects against mechanical damage, prevents water loss/pathogen entry, and allows continuous renewal via basal-layer division.

The outermost layer of skin (epidermis) is made of stratified squamous epithelium, in which cells are arranged in multiple layers stacked on top of one another. This multilayered arrangement supports several important roles:

  1. Mechanical protection: Because there are many layers of tightly packed cells, stratified epithelium can withstand friction, abrasion, and other mechanical stresses much better than a single-layered epithelium, protecting the softer tissues underneath.

  2. Barrier function (protection against water loss and pathogens): The outer cells of the epidermis become keratinised (filled with the protein keratin) and die, forming a tough, relatively impermeable outer layer. This keratinised layer reduces evaporative water loss from the body and forms a physical barrier that helps prevent the entry of microorganisms and other harmful agents.
