A taxon is a general term for a unit of classification, and it can represent any rank in the taxonomic hierarchy — not just species or genus.

When organisms are classified, they are arranged into a hierarchy of categories: species, genus, family, order, class, phylum/division, and kingdom. Each of these hierarchical ranks, when it is actually used to group a set of organisms, is called a taxon.
