Homolytic cleavage splits a bond symmetrically to give two radicals; heterolytic cleavage splits it asymmetrically to give a cation and an anion.

Homolytic (or homolysis) cleavage: the covalent bond breaks such that EACH of the two bonded atoms retains ONE electron from the shared pair. Since each fragment now has an unpaired electron, both products are neutral free radicals. This type of cleavage is typically favoured by high temperature, UV/light, or the presence of peroxides, and is shown with a single-barbed (fish-hook) curved arrow for each electron.

Example:

Cl-Cl --(heat or UV light)--> Cl. + Cl. (two chlorine free radicals)
