Question of 77

Q.A mass of 6kg is suspended by a rope of length 2m from a ceiling. A force of 60N in the horizontal direction is applied at the mid-point of the rope as shown in fig. below. What is the angle the rope makes with the vertical in equilibrium? And also calculate the tension in the string. (g = 10 m/s^2 and neglect mass of string)

A rope hangs from a ceiling and a 6kg mass hangs at the bottom, connected via a vertical lower segment (labelled tension T2). A horizontal — Class 12 Physics question

The lower rope segment is vertical with tension T2=mg=60T_2 = mg = 60 N; balancing this against the horizontal 60 N force at the bend point P gives θ=45°\theta = 45° and upper-segment tension T1=602≈84.9T_1 = 60\sqrt2 \approx 84.9 N.

Setup (matching the figure): the rope hangs from the ceiling to point P, where a horizontal force of 60 N is applied, then continues from P straight down to the 6 kg mass. Since nothing but the hanging mass acts on the lower segment (from P down to the mass) — no horizontal force acts on that segment itself — it must hang exactly vertically, and its tension simply supports the weight of the mass:

T2=mg=6×10=60 N(g=10 m/s2 as given)T_2 = mg = 6 \times 10 = 60\text{ N} \quad (g = 10\text{ m/s}^2\text{ as given})

Equilibrium at point P: three forces act at P — the upper tension T1T_1 (along the rope, at angle θ\theta to the vertical), the lower tension T2T_2 (pulling straight down, =60=60 N), and the applied horizontal force F=60F = 60 N.

Resolving at P:

  • Horizontal: T1sin⁡θ=F=60T_1\sin\theta = F = 60 N …
