Speed cannot be negative because it is defined as the magnitude of velocity, and a magnitude is always zero or positive.

Speed is a scalar quantity, defined as the distance travelled per unit time: speed=distancetime=∣velocity∣speed = \dfrac{distance}{time} = |velocity|. Since distance and time are both always ≥0\geq 0, speed can never come out negative — at minimum it is zero (when the object is at rest).
