On a position-time graph, two objects with different, constant velocities are shown as two straight lines of different slope; the point where the lines cross marks the time and place they meet.

For an object moving with uniform velocity, the position-time (x-t) graph is a straight line, and the slope of that line equals the velocity of the object. If two objects have unequal velocities, their x-t graphs are two straight lines with different slopes.

Construction: Draw the time axis (t) horizontally and position axis (x) vertically. Draw line 1 starting from some initial position x01x_{01} with a smaller slope (smaller velocity v1v_1), and line 2 starting from a different initial position x02x_{02} with a larger slope (larger velocity v2v_2, or moving in the opposite sense so the lines converge). Because the two lines have different slopes, they are not parallel and must cross at exactly one point (unless they start at the same point already, or move in a way that they never intersect within the range considered).
