Moment of inertia depends on how much mass a body has, how that mass is distributed relative to the rotation axis, and where/how the axis itself is chosen.

Moment of inertia about a given axis is defined as I=∑miri2I = \sum m_ir_i^2 for a system of particles (or I=∫r2 dmI = \int r^2\,dm for a continuous body), where rir_i is the perpendicular distance of the mass element mim_i from the axis of rotation.

From this definition, II depends on:

  1. Mass of the body — a heavier body (with the same shape/distribution) has a larger moment of inertia.
  2. Distribution of mass relative to the axis (i.e. the shape and size of the body) — mass located farther from the axis contributes much more to II (since the contribution scales as r2r^2) than the same mass located close to the axis.
