The thin-walled hollow cylinder has the larger moment of inertia, even though both objects have the same mass M and radius R.

Moment of inertia about the central (symmetry) axis for the two shapes:

  • Solid disc: I_disc = (1/2)MR²
  • Thin-walled hollow cylinder (all mass at radius R): I_cylinder = MR²

Since I_cylinder = MR² = 2 × [(1/2)MR²] = 2 × I_disc, the hollow cylinder has twice the moment of inertia of the disc.
