Isothermal processes keep temperature constant by exchanging heat slowly with surroundings (PV = const); adiabatic processes exchange no heat at all and instead change temperature (PV^γ = const).

Isothermal process:

  • Temperature of the system remains constant throughout (ΔT=0\Delta T = 0), so internal energy of an ideal gas does not change (ΔU=0\Delta U = 0).
  • It obeys Boyle's law: PV=constantPV = \text{constant}.
  • It occurs slowly, and requires the system to be in good thermal contact with a large reservoir so heat can flow in or out to keep temperature fixed. By the first law, ΔQ=ΔW\Delta Q = \Delta W (all heat supplied goes into work done).

Adiabatic process:

  • No heat enters or leaves the system: ΔQ=0\Delta Q = 0.
  • It obeys PVγ=constantPV^\gamma = \text{constant} (where γ=Cp/Cv\gamma = C_p/C_v), not Boyle's law. …
