An adiabatic process is one in which Q=0Q = 0 — the system is thermally isolated, so no heat is exchanged with the surroundings at all, though the internal energy can still change due to work done.

The four common thermodynamic processes and their defining feature:

  • Isothermal: temperature TT stays constant; heat IS exchanged (in fact, heat must flow in or out to keep TT fixed as the gas expands/compresses).
  • Adiabatic: no heat is exchanged with the surroundings at all, Q=0Q = 0 (achieved either by perfect thermal insulation or by the process happening too fast for heat to flow). Any change in internal energy comes entirely from work done on/by the gas: ΔU=−W\Delta U = -W.
  • Isobaric: pressure PP stays constant; heat is exchanged. …
