The sum of the marginal propensity to consume (MPC) and the marginal propensity to save (MPS) always equals 1, because every additional rupee of income is either consumed or saved — there is no third use.

The core idea here is beautifully simple. When a person’s income increases by one rupee, that rupee can only go to one of two places: either it is spent on consumption, or it is saved. There is no other option. The marginal propensity to consume (MPC) tells us the fraction of that extra rupee that goes to consumption. The marginal propensity to save (MPS) tells us the fraction that goes to saving.

Since the whole extra rupee must be accounted for, the two fractions must add up to exactly one. That is the economic logic — no algebra needed yet.
