Sustainable development strategies include switching to renewable energy, cleaner fuels, organic/traditional farming methods and traditional conservation practices. (OR: fisheries and horticulture give farmers high-value, water-light alternatives to traditional foodgrain farming, diversifying and raising rural incomes.)

Part 1 — Four strategies for sustainable development:

  1. Use of non-conventional/renewable energy sources: promoting solar energy, wind energy and biogas instead of exhaustible, polluting fossil fuels reduces environmental damage while still meeting energy needs, so that resources remain available for future generations.
  2. Use of cleaner fuels (e.g. CNG): switching public transport and vehicles from diesel/petrol to Compressed Natural Gas (as done in Delhi) substantially cuts vehicular air pollution without halting economic activity.
  3. Improved/efficient cooking devices and biogas: promoting LPG and improved chulhas (cook-stoves) in rural areas reduces dependence on firewood, cutting both deforestation and indoor air pollution.
  4. Traditional knowledge and conservation practices: reviving and using traditional water-harvesting structures, organic farming techniques and community-based forest/resource management helps conserve natural resources using low-cost, time-tested local methods.

Part 2 (OR) — Importance of Fisheries and Horticulture for agricultural diversification:

Fisheries: with its long coastline, numerous rivers and ponds, India has vast untapped potential for both inland and marine fish production. Fisheries provide livelihood and income to millions of coastal and rural poor, contribute significantly to food/nutritional security, and generate valuable export earnings (e.g. shrimp exports) — making it an important non-foodgrain income source for farming and fishing communities (the 'Blue Revolution').
