India's environmental degradation stems from a combination of industrial/urban pollution, overuse of natural resources to support a large and growing population, unsustainable farming practices, and poor waste-management infrastructure, especially affecting the poor.

India's drive for economic development, combined with a very large and still-growing population, has placed significant strain on the natural environment. Four key contributing factors:

  1. Rapid industrialisation and urbanisation. The expansion of industry and the growth of cities have led to rising air pollution (industrial emissions, vehicular exhaust) and water pollution (industrial effluents and untreated sewage discharged into rivers and water bodies), degrading both environmental quality and public health.

  2. Overexploitation of natural resources. To meet the demands of a growing population for land, fuel, and livelihood, forests have been cleared (deforestation) for agriculture, settlement, and timber, and grasslands have been overgrazed — both reducing forest cover, disrupting ecosystems, and accelerating soil erosion.

  3. Unsustainable agricultural practices. The intensive, input-heavy farming methods associated with the Green Revolution — excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and heavy reliance on groundwater irrigation — while raising yields, have also degraded soil quality over time and depleted groundwater tables in many regions faster than they can be naturally replenished.
