In understanding what national income means, two crucial points must be kept in mind: first, that it is inherently a flow variable tied to a time period, not a stock that exists at an instant; and second, that it must avoid double counting, i.e., it is built up from the value of final goods/services (or the sum of value added), never by simply adding the gross value of output at every stage of production.

(i) National income is a flow concept: it measures the value of goods and services a country produces during a given period of time, conventionally one accounting year.
