In a simple economy consisting of only two sectors -- households and firms -- there is a continuous, circular flow of income and expenditure between them. Households own the factors of production (land, labour, capital, entrepreneurship) and supply these factor services to firms; in return, firms make factor payments (rent, wages, interest, profit) to households, which constitutes household income.
