Invasive alien species out-compete, prey on or crowd out native species — e.g. Nile perch in Lake Victoria, invasive weeds (Parthenium/Lantana/water hyacinth), and African catfish in Indian rivers.

When a species is introduced (deliberately or accidentally) into a new area, it sometimes has no natural predators there and turns invasive — it spreads rapidly and out-competes or destroys the native (indigenous) species. Alien species invasion is one of the causes of biodiversity loss (part of "The Evil Quartet"). Three suitable examples:

  1. Nile perch in Lake Victoria: The predatory Nile perch was introduced into Lake Victoria in East Africa. It preyed heavily on the native fishes and caused the extinction of more than 200 species of cichlid fishes that were unique to the lake.

  2. Invasive weeds: Introduced plants such as Parthenium (carrot grass), Lantana and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) spread aggressively. Water hyacinth ("terror of Bengal") chokes water bodies, reduces oxygen and kills native aquatic plants and animals; Parthenium and Lantana overrun grasslands and displace native flora.
