Farmers/civil society opposed Bt Brinjal mainly due to unresolved health and biodiversity-safety concerns, and India's precautionary moratorium is a reasonable response until independent, thorough safety testing is completed.

Bt Brinjal is a genetically modified (Cry1Ac gene) brinjal engineered to resist the fruit and shoot borer pest. When the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) cleared it for commercial release in 2009, farmers, scientists and civil-society groups opposed it strongly, citing: (1) insufficient, non-independent long-term studies on its safety for human consumption; (2) India being a centre of origin/diversity for brinjal, raising concern that the introduced transgene could escape into wild and traditional brinjal relatives through cross-pollination, eroding native genetic diversity; and (3) concerns over corporate control of seed supply.
