After fertilisation in angiosperms, the synergids and antipodals degenerate, having served their roles in guiding the pollen tube and supporting early embryo sac development.

The embryo sac in flowering plants is a seven-celled, eight-nucleate structure that forms the female gametophyte. Understanding what happens to each cell type after fertilisation requires us to first grasp their individual roles and then see why some are no longer needed once the reproductive mission is accomplished.

At the micropylar end of the embryo sac sit three cells: the egg cell flanked by two synergids. The synergids are helper cells with a specialised structure called the filiform apparatus, which guides the pollen tube toward the egg. They secrete chemical signals that attract the pollen tube and create an entry path. Once the pollen tube arrives and discharges its two male gametes, the synergids have fulfilled their purpose. They begin to degenerate shortly after fertilisation because their guiding and facilitating role is complete.

At the opposite chalazal end lie three antipodal cells. Their function is less clearly defined than the synergids, but they are believed to provide nutrition to the developing embryo sac before fertilisation. Once double fertilisation occurs and the primary endosperm nucleus begins dividing to form endosperm tissue (which will nourish the developing embryo), the antipodals become redundant. They too degenerate after fertilisation. …
