The Hell–Volhard–Zelinsky reaction brominates the α-carbon of a carboxylic acid using Br₂ and a trace of red phosphorus.

The Hell–Volhard–Zelinsky (HVZ) reaction is used to selectively introduce a halogen at the α-carbon (the carbon adjacent to the −COOH-COOH group) of a carboxylic acid that has at least one α-hydrogen. Red phosphorus generates the reactive phosphorus tribromide in situ, which converts a small amount of the acid to its acid bromide (much more enolisable/reactive toward Br2Br_2 at the α-position); after α-bromination, the bromide exchanges back with more acid, regenerating the catalytic cycle.
