HVZ α\alpha-halogenates a carboxylic acid using X2\text{X}_2/red P; toluene → benzaldehyde with chromyl chloride is the Etard reaction; dry HCl gas promotes acetal formation with ethylene glycol.

a) Hell–Volhard–Zelinsky (HVZ) reaction: carboxylic acids having an α\alpha-hydrogen are halogenated at the α\alpha-carbon in the presence of a small amount of red phosphorus:

CH3COOH+Cl2→red PCl-CH2COOH+HCl\text{CH}_3\text{COOH} + \text{Cl}_2 \xrightarrow{\text{red P}} \text{Cl-CH}_2\text{COOH} + \text{HCl}

(chloroacetic acid). Further halogenation can give di- and tri-substituted acids.

b) Toluene to benzaldehyde with chromyl chloride (Etard reaction): toluene reacts with chromyl chloride CrO2Cl2\text{CrO}_2\text{Cl}_2 to form a chromium complex, which on acidic hydrolysis gives benzaldehyde:

C6H5CH3+CrO2Cl2→C6H5CH(OCrOHCl2)2→H3O+C6H5CHO\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{CH}_3 + \text{CrO}_2\text{Cl}_2 \rightarrow \text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{CH(OCrOHCl}_2)_2 \xrightarrow{\text{H}_3\text{O}^+} \text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{CHO}

Name of the reaction: Etard reaction. …
