Faraday's two laws relate the amount of a substance deposited during electrolysis to the charge passed, and compare different substances at the same charge via their equivalent weights.

Faraday's First Law of Electrolysis: The mass (ww) of a substance deposited or liberated at an electrode during electrolysis is directly proportional to the quantity of electric charge (QQ) passed through the electrolyte:

w∝Q,i.e.w=ZQ=Zitw \propto Q, \quad \text{i.e.}\quad w = ZQ = Zit

where ZZ is the electrochemical equivalent of the substance, ii is the current, and tt is the time.
