Potassium dichromate is made from chromite ore via sodium chromate and sodium dichromate; acidified KMnO4KMnO_4 oxidises both oxalic acid and Fe2+Fe^{2+}.

(a) Preparation of K2Cr2O7K_2Cr_2O_7 from chromite ore (FeCr2O4FeCr_2O_4):

  1. Fuse powdered chromite ore with sodium carbonate in free access of air (roasting): 4FeCr2O4+8Na2CO3+7O2→Δ8Na2CrO4+2Fe2O3+8CO24FeCr_2O_4 + 8Na_2CO_3 + 7O_2 \xrightarrow{\Delta} 8Na_2CrO_4 + 2Fe_2O_3 + 8CO_2.
  2. Filter and acidify the yellow sodium chromate solution with dilute sulphuric acid to convert it to sodium dichromate: 2Na2CrO4+H2SO4→Na2Cr2O7+Na2SO4+H2O2Na_2CrO_4 + H_2SO_4 \rightarrow Na_2Cr_2O_7 + Na_2SO_4 + H_2O.
  3. Treat the sodium dichromate solution with KClKCl; the less-soluble potassium dichromate crystallises out on cooling: Na2Cr2O7+2KCl→K2Cr2O7↓+2NaClNa_2Cr_2O_7 + 2KCl \rightarrow K_2Cr_2O_7\downarrow + 2NaCl.

(b) Reactions of acidified KMnO4KMnO_4:

(i) With oxalic acid — KMnO4KMnO_4 oxidises oxalic acid to carbon dioxide, itself being reduced from Mn7+Mn^{7+} to Mn2+Mn^{2+}: …
