Fuse MnO₂ with KOH + oxidant → K₂MnO₄ (green); oxidise to KMnO₄ (purple). As an oxidant in acid, MnO₄⁻ (Mn⁺⁷→Mn⁺², 5 e⁻) oxidises I⁻→I₂ and Fe²⁺→Fe³⁺.

Preparation of KMnO₄ from pyrolusite (MnO₂):

Step 1 — fusion: pyrolusite is fused with potassium hydroxide in the presence of an oxidising agent (air, O2O_2 or KNO3KNO_3) to give the dark-green potassium manganate, K2MnO4K_2MnO_4 (Mn in +6+6):

2MnO2+4KOH+O2⟶2K2MnO4+2H2O.2MnO_2 + 4KOH + O_2 \longrightarrow 2K_2MnO_4 + 2H_2O.

Step 2 — oxidation: the manganate (MnO42−MnO_4^{2-}) is oxidised to the purple permanganate (MnO4−MnO_4^-, Mn in +7+7), either electrolytically or by disproportionation in neutral/acidic solution:

3MnO42−+4H+⟶2MnO4−+MnO2+2H2O.3MnO_4^{2-} + 4H^+ \longrightarrow 2MnO_4^- + MnO_2 + 2H_2O.

Redox reactions of KMnO₄ in acidic medium (half-reaction: MnO4−+8H++5e−→Mn2++4H2OMnO_4^- + 8H^+ + 5e^- \rightarrow Mn^{2+} + 4H_2O):

(i) With potassium iodide (I⁻ oxidised to I₂):

2MnO4−+16H++10I−⟶2Mn2++5I2+8H2O.2MnO_4^- + 16H^+ + 10I^- \longrightarrow 2Mn^{2+} + 5I_2 + 8H_2O.
