The Fresnel distance zF=a2/λz_F = a^2/\lambda marks the boundary up to which ray optics (straight-line propagation) is valid for a given aperture; here it works out to 40 m40\ \text{m}.

Step 1: The Fresnel distance formula

For a beam of wavelength λ\lambda passing through an aperture (or slit) of size aa, diffraction causes the beam to spread out significantly only after it has travelled the Fresnel distance:

zF=a2λz_F = \frac{a^2}{\lambda}

For z≪zFz \ll z_F, the beam travels essentially as a ray (negligible spreading); ray optics is a good approximation up to about this distance.

Step 2: Substitute the given values …
